If you are one of the 85-90% of women who experience moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks, regardless of your weight, now may be the time to break free from the unsightly dimples that are holding back your confidence. The FDA has recently approved a new injectable treatment that has been shown to be just as safe and effective, if not more so, than any other existing treatment—QWO.
QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum) is a prescription injectable, the world’s first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for cellulite in the buttocks. Injected directly into the affected area, QWO boasts long-lasting results, no downtime, and virtually no side effects. Love Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics is one of the first practices in Oklahoma approved to carry and administer this revolutionary, minimally invasive procedure, and we’re ready to help you discover how QWO can give you the backside you’ve always wanted.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is not sagging skin (skin laxity) or fat. It is a skin condition that is medically harmless but that can be emotionally distressing for many women, especially because there isn’t much you can do about it. Cellulite is resistant to changes in exercise, diet, and weight loss, as well as many dermal treatments like massage or creams. Cellulite often appears as a wavy, bumpy, or dimpled skin texture that resembles cottage cheese, and while it can occur on the upper arms, breasts, and lower abdomen, it is most commonly found around the thighs and buttocks. QWO is specifically approved to treat women with cellulite on the buttocks.
What causes cellulite?
In the deep subcutaneous layer of your skin, fibrous bands of collagen called septae attach the skin to the muscle. Fat cells are deposited in the pockets among these bands in between the skin and the muscle. Over time, the septae can thicken and tighten, becoming less flexible in accommodating fat cells that accumulate between the skin and muscle. Instead of stretching or breaking, the connective bands of septae stay in place and pull the skin down, forcing the accumulated fat to push up toward the surface of the skin. This combined reaction results in the appearance of dimples or divots in the skin’s surface referred to as cellulite.
How does QWO cellulite treatment work?
QWO contains a mixture of two naturally-occurring collagenase enzymes, AUX-I and AUX-II. These enzymes target the collagen types I and III found in the septae, breaking down and dissolving the fibrous subdermal tissue that causes cellulite. This results in a chemically-driven structural change that allows the skin to smooth and tighten by:
- Releasing the fibrous bands
- Redistributing accumulated fat cells
- Stimulating new collagen growth for thinner, smaller, and more flexible collagen support bands (septae)
QWO is injected directly into cellulite dimples on the buttocks for a highly targeted and precise treatment procedure. It is administered in a series of treatments with 3 injection sessions performed 21 days apart. Up to 12 injections per buttock can be completed in an individual session that takes between 10-15 minutes, with you lying comfortably in the prone position.
How is QWO different from other cellulite treatments?
To date, there are no permanent cellulite treatments available, and many of them produce only subtle or very temporary results. Current treatments use lasers, microscopic incisions, energy like frequency or infrared technology to try to redistribute fat cells and smooth skin over a broad area.
QWO is nonsurgical, injected directly into the dimples of the buttocks to dissolve the fibrous tissue and allow the fat cells, collagen, and skin to reorganize naturally and more smoothly. Results are visible within 28 days of treatment and there is virtually no recovery or downtime. Though there are minimal side effects like bruising and mild discomfort at the injection site, these fade within 7-21 days on their own. Discomfort and bruising are also less noticeable with each subsequent treatment.
Unlike cream or lotion cellulite treatments or even specialized massage—which don’t penetrate the subcutaneous layer of skin—QWO facilitates the structural change your skin needs to dramatically reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Similarly, treatments and procedures that remove fat do not specifically target or treat cellulite.
Is QWO cellulite treatment right for me?
Although cellulite varies by individual and can be caused by a wide range of physiological, genetic, and hormonal factors, QWO treats the three main elements at the root of all cellulite: thinning skin that cannot retain its shape; fat cells that become larger and place more pressure on the skin; and fibrous bands that displace fat cells and create further tension on the skin.
QWO is most effective in treating dimple-like cellulite in patients with good skin elasticity, but the majority of adult women with cellulite will benefit from QWO.
You may be a good candidate for QWO if you:
- Are a woman with moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks that has not responded to other fat reduction procedures like liposuction or CoolSculpting
- Have realistic expectations that QWO will significantly reduce but may not eliminate cellulite
QWO is not recommended if you are allergic to collagenase or have an active infection at the treatment site. QWO is also not approved for men or for application to any area other than the buttocks at this time.
QWO can be used as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with a surgical or other nonsurgical fat reduction treatment to improve the appearance of the skin.
