Lip Fillers and Injections
Lip injections and dermal fillers are two popular cosmetic procedures that can improve the looks of your lips and minimize wrinkles or fine lines.
Lip injections are a type of dermal filler that use hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring filler. Fillers like Restylane or Juvederm are injected with a thin needle into the lips, and results normally last from six months to one year. Lip injections are ideal for patients seeking fuller, more defined lips.
During your consultation, Dr. Love and his R.N. team will discuss all of your options with you as well as your goals and the desired look you want to achieve, then help you determine which procedure is right for you.
Types of Dermal Fillers
There are several different types of dermal fillers:
- Hyaluronic acid (HA): An acid that naturally occurs in your body. It hydrates and plumps your skin.
- Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA): A naturally occurring mineral compound found in your bones. It’s used to treat deeper wrinkles and skin folds.
- Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA): This substance is used to smooth out deep facial wrinkles. It stimulates your cells to produce more collagen which will plump and smooth your skin.
- Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA): This filler consists of microspheres and collagen, which fill in deep wrinkles and help firm your skin. It is one of the longer-lasting solutions, producing results that can last up to five years. It does require allergy testing to make sure you will not have a bad reaction.

Juvederm XC a hyaluronic acid* filler, can instantly smooth wrinkles around your mouth and nose, or enhance your lip size and shape.
Radiesse is a calcium-based volumizing filler that helps stimulate natural collagen production for results that typically last a year or longer.
Restylane a hyaluronic acid* filler, adds volume and fullness to skin to even out moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth.
• Refyne – Restylane® Refyne is designed with XpresHAn Technology™ to help soften laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). This can help you restore a more natural look to your face while maintaining your facial expressions.
• Defyne – Crafted with XpresHAn Technology™, Restylane® Defyne helps smooth out deep laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). Also helps restore a more natural look to your face while maintaining your facial expressions.
Restylane Kysse is the first lip filler designed with XpresHAn Technology™ for flexible movement and natural-looking volume proven to last for up to one year, all while enhancing texture and color of the lips and maintaining a full range of expressions. Kysse adds volume, smooths upper lip lines, and offers precise, natural-looking results.
With age, your skin’s natural collagen supply decreases and you may start to notice wrinkles and facial aging. Activate the skin’s natural regenerative process with Sculptra Aesthetic and help replenish lost collagen1-3, the most common protein in the body that supports cells and tissue. This FDA-approved injectable subtly and gradually over time helps restore facial volume.
**Your body naturally produces hyaluronic acid. This gives treatments that contain it a high safety profile, and is increasingly common in most injectable fillers today.
The Benefits of Dermal Fillers for Lips and Face
Dermal fillers are minimally invasive treatments that require little to no downtime, and most patients begin seeing results within just a few days.
Dermal fillers offer a range of benefits, including:
• Restoring lost lip volume
• Plumping thin lips
• Correcting asymmetrical lip shape
• Smoothing fine lines and wrinkles
With minimal downtime and only mild, temporary side effects such as slight swelling or bruising, fillers are an excellent option for patients looking to enhance their appearance with low risk and natural-looking results.
The Lip Filler Procedure
Before your lip filler treatment, you will meet with Dr. Tim Love or Dr. Kenny Quang, along with our experienced clinical team, including Sara Robison, R.N., B.S.N., for a personalized consultation. During this visit, your provider will discuss your goals, evaluate your facial features, and select the most appropriate filler for your needs.
The procedure begins with the application of a topical numbing cream to maximize comfort. A very fine needle is then used to carefully inject the filler into the lips to create a fuller, more youthful appearance. If needed, dermal filler may also be placed into deeper lines around the mouth to smooth and soften them.
After treatment, you may experience mild swelling or tenderness, but these effects typically subside within a few days.

FAQs
Do lip injections hurt?
Most patients report minimal to no pain during the lip filler procedure. A topical numbing cream is usually applied to your lips before the injection, and the needle used is very small and applied with careful skill and precision, so discomfort is minimal.
How long is the recovery period after getting lip injections or fillers?
Recovery time after a lip filler procedure is usually very short. Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, although there may be some minor swelling or tenderness for a few days. It is important to follow post-treatment instructions to ensure a safe and successful recovery.
When will I see results from my lip filler procedure?
Results from lip filler procedures are often visible immediately after the injection. However, the full effects of the procedure may take a week or longer to show as any swelling or tenderness subsides, and the filler settles in.
How long do lip fillers last?
How long the results last depends on the type of filler used. Most fillers will last six months to a year, although some can last up to five years. The results can vary from person to person as everyone metabolizes the filler at different rates.
