The Norwood Scale is used by hair restoration specialists to gauge the severity of a man’s hair loss. There are 7 “levels” on the scale.
The 7 levels of hair loss are as follows:
- Stage 1: No significant hair loss or hairline recession.
- Stage 2: Some hairline recession, usually around the temples.
- Stage 3: Hairline becomes deeply recessed at both temples, with recessed spots completely bare or sparsely covered in hair. The hairline resembles a M, U, or V shape.
- Stage 4: Hairline is more severe, and there is thinning on the vertex (back of the top) of the head. The two areas of hair loss are not connected.
- Stage 5: The areas of hair loss have increased in size. There is less hair that divides the two areas.
- Stage 6: The balding areas more or less join together, with only a thin band of hair separating the two.
- Stage 7: The most severe stage of hair loss. Only a band of hair on the back of the head remains.
Understanding the Norwood Scale can be an asset for you during your consultation. It can be helpful to know where you land on the scale and where you would like to end up by the end of your treatment. That way, you and your doctor can better construct a plan that fits your needs.
